If a clot is large, or if there are many clots, pulmonary embolism can cause death.
Half of people with pulmonary embolism have no symptoms. If they have symptoms, they may include shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing up blood. Symptoms of blood clots include swelling, pain and redness in the legs. The goal of treatment is to break down blood clots.
